VASILI

“She knows the names of the wolves who participated and oversaw the attempts to change the humans,” I told my brother.

His eyes widened, and then he held my gaze. “That is risky.”

Charley had begun to cry when Yaelle spoke of being torn from her mother’s arms. She’d rested her cheek against Alexi’s chest throughout the rest of the story. Now, she sat up. “Why is it risky?” She looked between her mate and me.

I gave my brother a stern look. Yaelle was my mate. It was my duty to protect her. “If the Lycan Council did not sanction those experiments, then the wolves that participated put all of us in great jeopardy.”

“It is enough of a transgression to extinguish an entire line,” Vasili added.

Charley’s eyes grew huge.

“Plus, Yaelle is unlike other Lycans, and some might not approve,” I added.

“Because some might consider me an abomination,” Yaelle told her. “They might kill Addie and me.”

“Our father would have,” Alexi told the females.

“But-but,” Charley sputtered, “she is his mate.”

That would have made no difference to him. Black and Novus were very different than the pack we grew up with. “Nobody is killing you,” I told her harshly. “She heard the names of the Lycans involved with the Germans. They were helping to make the super-soldiers.”

“Aren’t you technically already super-soldiers?” Charley asked.

That was a good point. Although, it didn’t lessen the danger for Yaelle and Addie.

“What are you going to do with this information?” Alexi asked Yaelle.

“Nothing.” She shrugged. “Who would I tell?”

“Black,” Charley told her. “You’ll have to tell Black.”

Again, Yaelle looked at me. “He is the Leader of Novus,” I explained.

“Go before a Packleader?” Her gaze filled with fright. “I... I can’t.”

“You or Vasili must.” Alexi waited until we were all looking at him. “It is his duty and ours, too.”

Yaelle started to open her mouth.

“You are not an abomination. He won’t think that. Black is…” Alexi paused to come up with the right word. “Accepting.”

“Hear him out,” I whispered to my mate, who I felt would run at any second.

She closed her eyes and swallowed loudly.

“Black isn’t like other Leaders. Even his mate is unlike any other wolf,” Alexi told my mate.

“Theo was born human,” Charley said. “After they were mated, The Lady changed her.”

“What?” Yaelle was shocked.

“The way she tells it is that The Lady gave her gifts.” Charley paused for a moment. “She’s psychic. Then after they officially mated, The Lady changed her into a wolf. Theo didn’t have to go through the whole learning how to control your wolf thing.” Charley spoke about that time as if she had learned much about it.

I silently asked my brother if Charley wanted to be changed. He must have guessed my question because he nodded.

Charley continued, “One day, she was human, and then the next, she was a wolf.” She shrugged and grinned. “If you ask me, that sounds like the way to go. My friend Cassidy, a human, was changed, and some of her stories are freaky.”

“Black needs to know that Lycans willingly participated in that experiment,” Alexi told her.
